KAVA BAR serving traditional Kava

Kava Bar and Community

We are Atlanta's first and only sober Kava bar. Established in 2017, Kava Mama is a place for natural health, community, and an inclusive alcohol-free social scene. We serve top-shelf, traditional, hand-squeezed kava, as well as a variety of flavored kavas and therapeutic teas. We source our kava directly from the farmers in the pacific islands. We pride ourselves on the quality of our kava and our care for everyone that comes in contact with Kava Mama, from customers to suppliers, our vendors, and our staff, friends, family, and all of the new friends we meet through this beautiful 3000-year-old tradition.

When is the best time to drink kava?

Avoid drinking kava during or immediately after a large meal. Everyone’s routine is different, but one example of a good time to drink kava would be 1 to 2 hours after a light lunch. Also, consider the time of day as well. Kava is about feeling relaxed, less stressed and less anxious, so try to avoid drinking kava where you are likely to be too distracted or stressed to feel the effects, and seek out times where you can relax, wind down, and let the kava do it’s thing.

How do I drink kava and how much should I have?

Traditionally, kava is drank from a coconut shell in one big gulp. Some individuals will feel the effects from drinking kava after 8 ounces while others may want to try 16 ounces for their first time. Another thing to keep in mind is that kava has a reverse tolerance, meaning that the longer and more regularly you drink kava, the less you will need to drink at one time to feel the same effects. The lengths of the reverse tolerance will vary from person to person, so it is not uncommon for some people to not feel anything the first time they try kava. The kavalactones (the chemical compounds that give kava its effects) will build up in your body over time, and you’ll find that as you settle in to a routine drinking kava you’ll feel even better and more relaxed than you did when you first started your journey with kava.
